I know the value of a coach because I started as a client.
When I began my career in education, I had no idea what I was doing. I did not feel that my training prepared me for the realities of urban teaching, so I went into grant management — and it was through this work that I realized the value of being asked questions.
My supervisor at the time, Dr. Melanie Barron, asked me myriad questions that helped me clarify what I wanted to do and what I was actually doing. Her questions opened up worlds in me that I never knew existed. I began to see myself as a capable professional, albeit with a lot to learn, that benefited from being challenged to think about why I was doing what I did, how I could do it differently, what my impact was on other people, what I learned from my experiences, and so on.
I didn’t know that Melanie was coaching me!
Yet by being constantly challenged in a supportive way, I benefited by clarifying my beliefs, values and actions. I developed my confidence and competence as she coached me.
Moving into a teaching position, I sought out a coach who met with me once a week to help me reflect on my instruction. This experience challenged my assumptions and beliefs, leading me to further clarify who I was as a teacher and what kind of educational experience I wanted for my students.
While continuing my career as an educator, I decided to train as a leadership coach specializing in educators. I have since coached professionals at various levels over the last 20 years, in a variety of roles.
My commitment is to help people think through their challenges in a way that supports autonomy and effectiveness. I derive significant joy from helping professionals reflect on whether their current career is the right one for them; or how they could navigate a specific situation; or how they want to show up at work when they take on a new role; or what leadership skills they would like to develop and how they might do that. Whatever the challenge, helping others by being a thought partner is so much fun!
In my experience, when people are given the support to reflect, they can opt to thrive, and that is why coaching is my passion.
